Penrith Phantoms Finish in 5th Place
...after losing the 4th place playoff match against the Pirates 4:3 in overtime!
•
GAME 18 - PLAYOFF FOR 4TH PLACE
Loss 4:3 in Overtime - 08/10/04
PHANTOMS v PEACHTREE PIRATES at Blacktown:
This game turned out to be the most disappointing loss of the season. Not only did it finish the Phantom's season, it was a game in which they dominated and should have won almost comfortably, even though they had only 7 skaters. With the score being 3:1 in favour of the Phantoms and with only 2 minutes to go, the Pirates got one back and then the unthinkable happened, the pirates equalised 3:3 with only 12 seconds to go in the match. With fatigue well and truly set in, the Phantoms just ran out of steam to lose 4:3 in sudden death overtime.
GAME 17 - Loss 11:2 - 03/10/04
PHANTOMS v PEARLY GATES at Canterbury:
The Phantoms' last regular season game turned out to be their biggest defeat of the season. With only 7 players showing up & their regular goalie, Robert Schaftlein injured and back up Bohdan Gorman unavailable, the Phantoms were outplayed & outshot 30 to 8. Senior C part time goalie Richard Price took up the job in goal and although making some nice glove saves the onslaught was just too strong.
GAME 16 - Win 3:2 - 26/09/04
PHANTOMS v PIRATES at Penrith:
The first period was scoreless, but the Pirates drew first blood with a goal mid way through the second period to which the Phantoms answered back 4 minutes later through Shane McPherson's goal. Only one and a half minutes after the equaliser, the Phantoms took a 2:1 lead when Riley Bryn beat the Pirates' goalie with a quick shot into the top right corner of the goal.
The Phantoms held that lead until the Pirates evened it up at 2 all with only 1 1/2 minutes to go in the match. With the clock winding down and the match looking a certain draw, the Phantoms took one last attack on the Pirates goal. Defenceman Chris Bjornberg took the puck in deep behind the Pirates goal and passed the puck to Riley Bryn standing on the goal line. Taking a quick look at his options, Riley saw the Goalie out of position and shot the puck at the goal. With just 2 seconds to go in the match, the puck bounced off the goalie and trickled into the net. That great effort along with an MVP of the game performance by their goalie, Bohdan Gorman, saw the Phantoms win 3:2.
GAME 15 - Loss 4:1 - 19/09/04
PHANTOMS v CHIEFS at Penrith:
The teams were locked at 1:1 with the final (3rd) 15 minute period to go in which Canterbury scored 3 unanswered goals to win the game 4:1.
GAME 14 - Win 6:1 - 12/09/04
PHANTOMS v NORTHSTARS at Penrith:
Up till now, this game turned out to be the Phantom's best game of the season. Right from the opening face-off the Phantoms dominated the game with good speed, passing and team play, eventually winning 6:1 with the only Newcastle goal being an own goal after an unlucky bounce.
GAME 13 - Win 5:1 - 05/09/04
PHANTOMS v FLYERS at Penrith:
This game almost continued on from the last. Blacktown turned up with just 6 players and a goalie and the game got out to a decent start with Penrith scroing the first goal just before the periods end.The second period saw the Flyers equalise just 1 minute in. Then all hell broke loose in the third period with 56 minutes worth of penalties given out, 12 minutes to the Phantoms and 44 minutes to the Flyers. Due to 2 send offs and only having the 7 players, the Flyers had to play the rest of the third period 1 man short. The Phantoms quickly capitolised scoring 4 goals in the third period and winning the game 5:1.
GAME 12 - Loss 5:2 - 04/09/04
PHANTOMS v CHIEFS at Canterbury:
This was easily the Phantom's worst game of the season. Nothing clicked for them and although they scored the first goal of the match and held it at 2:2 going into the third period, the Cheifs ran out winners 5:2.
GAME 11 - Loss 3:2 - 29/08/04
PHANTOMS v PIRATES at Blacktown:
The first period saw the Phantoms get up early with 2 goals. In the second period the Pirates answered back with 3 of their own. The score was 3:2 in favour of the Pirates going into the third period. It, however, remained scoreless and the game finished up with the Pirates 3:2 narrow winners over the Phantoms.
GAME 10 - Loss 3:2 - 15/08/04
PHANTOMS v PEARLY GATES at Penrith:
Phantoms met the top placed team and last year's winners, the Canterbury Pearly Gates for the second time this season. The first game resulted in a 2:2 tie and Penrith was looking to go one better. However, the Phantoms were out played by the Pearly Gates, being out shot 26 to 9 and thanks to an awesome performance by goalie Robert Schaftlein the score would have been higher. The match was tied at two, but with only 15 seconds to go and the Phantoms short a man, an unlucky bounce trickled in between the post and Roberts pads.
The first period saw the Pearly Gates open the scoring 5 minutes in and then extend their lead to 2:0 on consecutive shots just 2 minutes later.
In the second period, the Phantoms hit back early, scoring their first of the game just 2.45 minutes in to be just one behind 1:2. The goal was scored by Ben Bennett, assisted by Frank Corby and Riley Bryn. With 5.30 minutes to go in the second period, Steve Bullock fed Riley with a pass who took the puck down the left side of the rink and gave a precision pass to Ben in front of the goal. Ben made no mistake with a quick shot into the top right corner over the goalies glove to notch up his second for the night.
The third period was a see saw battle with neither team being able to break the deadlock. With 1.22 minutes reamining in the match Ben Bennett was called for a 2 minute penalty and the Phantoms had to play out the match a man short. The Penrith penalty kill almost pulled it off and came away with a 2:2 tie. But it wasn't to be, with only 15 seconds to go, an unlucky bounce trickled in, winning the match for the Pearly Gates 3:2.
GAME 9 - Win 4:2 - 01/08/04
PHANTOMS v NORTHSTARS at Newcastle:
Phantoms once again travelled up to Newcastle and came home with a solid 4 to 2 win against the Northstars. Penrith dominated most of the game out shooting Newcastle 27 to 17 with Robert Schaftlein turning aside 15 of the Nortstars' shots.
The first period was scoreless & fairly uneventful apart from Ron McMahon hitting the post to almost put Phantoms on the board.
The second period, however, was full of action. Just over 2 minutes in Riley Bryn opened the Phantoms scoring after a nice passing play from Ben Bennett and Shane MacPherson. 2 minutes later, the Northstars capitolised on a Phantoms defensive blunder and equalised the game at 1 all. The game started to get alot more physical and with 2.06 to go in the second period, both teams were given holding penalties resulting in a 4 on 4 for 2 minutes, Vadim Joauine took the penalty for Penrith. The Phantoms took advantage of the more open ice and scored 2 quick goals from George Kozumplik and Shane MacPherson 45 second apart. Frank Corby and George assisting on Shanes goal. The second period ended with Phantoms 3:1 in front.
Just over 4 minutes into the third period saw Penrith increase their lead to 4:1 with a second goal from Shane MacPherson assisted by Steve Green. The game then got even more physical resulting in a Phantoms player, Brenden Love, ejected from the game and the Northstars on a 3 minute powerplay which the Phantoms killed off. With 5.20 to go in the match, Newcastle got a goal back to make it 4:2. Penrith killed off a late 2 minute penalty to Ben Bennett and held on to win 4:2.
GAME 8 - Win 19:0 - 04/07/04
PHANTOMS v BEARS '2' at Penrith:
The Phantoms played the bottom of the table Sydney Bears '2' in what turned out to be a no contest. The Phantoms scored 2 quick goals in the first shift of the match and were never threatened, finishing with a 19 goal to 0 win. The Sydney Bears '2', who will be relegated to the Senior 'C' competition after these first 8 games, only put 6 shots on the Phantoms goalie while Penrith had 38.
GAME 7 - Win 3:1 - 19/06/04
PHANTOMS v NORTHSTARS at Newcastle:
On Saturday 19 June, the team travelled up to face the Newcastle Northstars, and despite missing a couple of players, came away with a good 3:1 WIN. Newcastle opened the scoring with a lucky first period goal, but the Phantoms' defence tightened up allowing the "Inline" forward line of Shane, Riley & Ben to score the equaliser on a nice passing play.
The defence continued to play well, breaking up most of the Northstars' attacks, keeping the puck out of their zone well and making good passes to the forwards. The Phantoms defence then added a goal with a solid slapshot taken by Carl from the blue line. It deflected off a Newcastle defenceman and past the Goalie to give the Phantoms a 2:1 lead. That goal seemed to motivate the rest of the players and the team was unlucky not to extend their lead with numerous good scoring chances hitting the post once and a few shots going just wide of the net. The 'Inline' forward line dominated the last period with great passing & puck control and it was only a matter of time before they got the Phantoms' third goal ensuring a satisfying 3:1 win.
GAME 6 - Win 3:1 - 13/06/04
PHANTOMS v BEARS 1 at Penrith:
Playing at home, the Phantoms faced the Sydney Bears 1 and won the game 3:1, a result that didn't truly reflect the dominance the Phantoms had over the Bears. The Phantoms had 35 shots on the Bears Goal while the Bears had only 5 on the Phantoms.
GAME 5 - Tie 2:2 - 06/06/04
PHANTOMS v PEARLY GATES at Canterbury:
In game 5 the Phantoms met last years Premiers, the 'Pearly Gates' on their home ice, and showed great promise with a 2:2 finish. It could have easily been a win with the Pearly Gates equalising with just 2 minutes to go, never the less a great result for the Phantoms.
GAME 4 - Win 9:0 - 30/05/04
PHANTOMS v EAGLES at Canterbury:
Game 4 was against the Canterbury Eagles which turned out to be another convincing away win, 9:0.
GAME 3 - Tie 2:2 - 23/05/04
PHANTOMS v PIRATES at Penrith:
Riding on the last games big win, the Phantoms faced arch rivals Peachtree Pirates on home ice which turned out to be a fast & exciting game. Even though Penrith out played & out shot the pirates the game finished 2 all, with Phantoms equalising with only 40 seconds to go.
GAME 2 - Win 11:1 - 16/05/04
PHANTOMS v CHIEFS at Canterbury:
In game 2 the team quickly recovered though posting a solid 11:1 away win against the Canterbury Chiefs.
GAME 1 - Loss 3:9 - 02/05/04
PHANTOMS v FLYERS at Penrith:
The season didn't start out too good with a first game 3:9 loss to last years finalists, the Blacktown Flyers on home ice.
